Charcuterie and Cutting Board Care

Charcuterie boards are usually designed with the face (pretty side) of the board facing up. The face of the board displays all the grain characteristics of the wood.

Cutting boards are usually made with the edge or end of the wood as the cutting surface. This type of board will show less knife marks over time.

All FTW boards are made of a combination of domestic and exotic hardwoods including maple, walnut, cherry, white oak, hickory, yellow and purple heart.

Yes, all FTW boards are finished with a combination of food safe mineral oil and beeswax.

After use, simply hand wash your board gently with a soft wash cloth. You should rinse off your board and hand dry immediately. Using this process will extend the life of your board.

No wood cutting boards should ever be put into a dishwasher.

No cutting boards should ever be soaked in a water. Soaking of the board will deteriorate your board and will quickly remove the food safe oil and wax.

Yes, a small amount on a washcloth will suffice. A gentle rubbing is all you need. Rinse under running water and quickly towel dry.

Yes, after a few washes your board may begin to dry out a little. This is normal, the more you wash a board the more the oil finish will come off. As long as you gently wash your board, it should be fine for a while. Of course it always depends on how much it is used. The more it is washed the sooner the oil and wax will be removed.

My suggestion would be to rub some food safe oil and wax (sometimes call board butter) to your board after every few washes. This will keep your board looking fresh and new for a lifetime.

If your board begins to look dull or feels a little rough to the touch. Your board board should feel silky smooth. If it looks shiny it likely has enough board butter, simply use a soft paper towel and buff the board, using a light, circular motion. If it looks a little dull after buffing, use a little board butter.

Simply take a soft cloth or paper towel and scoop a small amount of board butter on the end. Apply it to the board using a circular pattern. You do not need to over saturate the board. Once the board is covered let it sit for few minutes so that the board will absorb the oil. The wax will remain on the surface. Wipe off any excess, and using a soft cloth or paper towel gently buff the board. You don't want to rub hard here as you'll just remove the oil and wax you just applied. You board is now ready for use again.

FTW board butter is made of a combination of food safe mineral oil and beeswax.

The quick answer is yes, but it is important to know a couple of things. All FTW boards are made of hardwoods which means they are durable enough to cut on. However, over time, knife marks may appear on the surface and your knives may dull sooner. The face grain of a board is not as durable as the edge or end grains but many people use it. Charcuterie boards are designed to display and showcase your food so most are used as a serving tray.

My recommendation is to have nice charcuterie board to serve with and a good hardy cutting board to cut on. The care of both is the same but a cutting board will likely need a little more frequent care and your knives will likely stay sharper longer.
